Dear CII Colleagues,

Please join us next Friday, March 14th at 1:00 pm ET, for an investor-focused webinar on water sourcing risks associated with hydraulic fracturing and shale energy development. Ceres' Monika Freyman will be joined by Dr. JP Nicot, who studies the impact of fracking water use on groundwater resources at the University of Texas, and by Marcus Griswold, who is researching water sourcing impacts from the development boom in the Bakken in North Dakota for the NRDC.

The rise of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies for extracting oil and gas resources has a significant impact on water availability, particularly in already water stressed regions of the country. Through the presentation of Ceres’ latest research on this topic, Hydraulic Fracturing & Water Stress: Water Demand by the Numbers, we will provide insights into the various water sourcing risks facing oil and gas companies in the United States and Western Canada. Our guest expert panel can provide important insights on community, regulatory and water availability issues on the ground in Texas and North Dakota.

This webinar looks to provide investors with a better understanding of water sourcing risks and makes recommendations for how investors can drive oil and gas companies and their service providers to minimize their water demands and reduce their impacts on communities and the environment.

Guest Speakers:

Monika Freyman, Senior Manager, Water Program, Ceres

Monika works on the Water Program researching and conducting corporate and investor engagement on the risks and opportunities related to growing water scarcity and water quality issues.

Prior to Ceres, Monika worked as a research consultant for the Initiative for Responsible Investment at Harvard, exploring the roots of the concept of sustainability across a broad spectrum of disciplines to inform the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB) in their efforts to evolve corporate reporting standards. As a Chartered Financial Analyst with a graduate degree in Freshwater Ecology, she is committed to raising awareness of water risks and opportunities facing the investment community.

Dr. JP Nicot, Bureau of Economic Geology, The University of Texas at Austin

Dr. J.P. Nicot is a Research Scientist with the Bureau of Economic Geology, a research unit of The University of Texas at Austin. His present general areas of interest include the impact of human activities on water resources, currently focused on carbon storage and hydraulic fracturing, and inversely, the availability of water resources to support human activities. Dr. Nicot holds a Doctorate in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas.

Marcus Griswold, NRDC

Marcus holds a Ph.D. in environmental engineering sciences and a Masters in entomology from the University of Florida. He couples research, policy, and communication tools to understand and develop solutions to complex issues in aquatic ecosystems including forest management, urban stormwater, and climate resilience. He was the founding board member of Blue Water Baltimore and the Maryland Climate Communications Consortium, providing scientific and technical expertise. At NRDC, he is currently evaluating the impacts of water use and management on natural resources to develop improved strategies for water use in the face of climate change, reservoir operations, and the burgeoning oil and gas industry.

We hope you can join us,
